Chevrolet Volt
Chevy is introducing the Volt in 2011. It runs on only electricity for 40 miles at which point the gas motor starts to charge the batteries. The motor is not connected to the drivetrain at all - only to the charging system.
Since the gas motor starts at 40 miles, and in the Rocketboom video a Chevy engineer states that it kicks in when the battery has 1/3 of its charge left, the range is probably more accurately 60 miles.
In this Rocketboom video, a retarded or drunk woman takes on a German engineer in a battle of wits. If you guess that the engineer wins, you're right!
