Feds open 'formal safety defect' probe into Chevy Volt

"Federal safety regulators announced Friday that they have opened "a formal safety defect investigation" into the Chevrolet Volt over concerns the electric car's battery may pose a significant fire risk."

Note that this is not a recall and there have been no real world incidents. It's only a hypothetical risk based on crash testing.

Consumer Reports Recommends the Chevy Volt

The Stranger's J. Golub comments on an unusually positive (for Consumer Reports) review of the Chevy Volt by Consumer Reports. As often is the case, the comments section is more valuable than the article itself!

I'm rather skeptical of the environmental bona fides of hybrid cars. Liquid fuels are intrinsically more efficient at storing and transporting energy. The Volt's design takes advantage of the best batteries and gasoline can offer: the former short range efficiency, the latter energy density.

Hertz Makes the CONNECTion - Rents First Chevy Volt in NYC

A Mr. Elliott Jones was the first person to rent the Chevy Volt from Hertz Rent-A-Car in NYC through their CONNECT by Hertz program. CONNECT is similar to ZipCar in other cities with membership and rent by the hour or day appeal. The unique thing about the CONNECT by Hertz NYC is that they rent the Prius, the Smart ED, the Nissan Leaf, and now the Chevy Volt!!! So if you ever wanted to test drive any of these electrified vehicles without a salesperson in the passenger seat, here is your chance!!!

GM - You are Goliath, Not David...Don't Start Squashing Yet

General Motors defends their stance as an Electric Vehicle Supporting Corporation as if they have nothing in their closet. They attack, to some degree the "little guys", Tesla Motors and others by comparing big versus little, as in David and Goliath.

Wall Street Journal Calls the Chevy Volt a Mistake

The Wall Street Journal sadly argues that GM should abandon the Volt and focus solely on it's most profitable, best-selling cars.

The Wall Street Journal's embarrassingly short-sighted vision ignores all benefits other than economic and is exactly the attitude that encourages corporations to seek profit at the expense of far worse effects.

Chevy is introducing the Volt in 2011. It runs on only electricity for 40 miles at which point the gas motor starts to charge the batteries. The motor is not connected to the drivetrain at all - only to the charging system.

Since the gas motor starts at 40 miles, and in the Rocketboom video a Chevy engineer states that it kicks in when the battery has 1/3 of its charge left, the range is probably more accurately 60 miles.

Why Not the Chevrolet "Copout"?

Why not name the Chevrolet Volt the "Copout", the "Blend", the "Gaselectrick" or any other name more akin to what is under its skin. The Chevrolet website states that the new Volt will have a range of 40 miles on 8kw hours of electricity before it kicks into the 300 mile reserve gas mode. I remember a couple of years ago, going to a Nationals Baseball game at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, seeing the Volt prototype parked out front of RFK Stadium for baseball enthusiasts to see for the first time.
